Mendip Ring +

Circular Burrington Combe to the Wrangle. 10 Miles

This walk starts from the top car park at Burrington Combe. Grid Ref. ST 488581

We make our way to the highest point of the Mendips at Beacon Batch, then on through the Roman ruins at Netherwood to pass Hazel Warren Farm and Butts Quarry Farm before reaching the Wrangle. We then follow the Mendip Ring back to Burrington Combe via Hazel Manor and wonderful views of Blagdon and Chew Magna lakes.

1.
With your back to the car park turn right and follow the path through the woods parallel with the road on your right to emerge back onto the road, cross to the path opposite and follow the Mendip Ring to reach the cairn on the top of the hill, this is Beacon Batch the highest point on the Mendips. Now follow the path heading towards the wireless aerials, on reaching a gate continue into the track and head towards the wireless station at the top of the hill. On reaching the lane on the top of the hill turn right and follow the lane out to a junction, turn right then take the first path on your left follow the path round the pond to the left then take a narrow path on your right taking you up to a hardcore track , turn left and follow this round to the right by the large tree, follow this to the top of the hill it turns into a driveway which you follow out to the B3134.

Cross to the lane opposite follow this for approx 1.5 miles passing the entrance to Hazel Manor and onto pass Butts Quarry Farm, at the cross roads turn left to the Wrangle and a fantastic view of Chew Valley lake. Take the first path on your right next to Holly Bush Cottage then after crossing a stile turn left downhill to reach the lane again, take the first path on your left to join the Mendip Ring, follow the path diagonally right to the bottom corner of the field through a kissing gate continue down the hill in the same direction to pass through another kissing gate, on reaching the bottom of the hill turn left which takes you behind the cottages to an old lane. Cross this and take the path opposite uphill to reach Hazel Farm pass the buildings on your right to cross a stile next to a gate, pass through the farmyard into a track, now follow the drive out towards the lane. After passing through a deer fence take the permissive path on your right along Green Lane.

We are now following the Limestone Link as well as the Mendip Ring, we cross Ubley Drove and on to reach Leaze Farm where we turn left to reach Two Trees Lane, turn right downhill taking the first path on your left to reach Ellick Road. Turn left taking the first path on the right (Newfields) on reaching the house take the path on the right down the side of the house which takes you across a field to Luvers Lane, turn left along the lane, continue into the field at the end of the lane then take the first path on your left following it down passing Lower Ellick Farm to reach the road at the top of Burrington Combe, turn right follow the path back through the woods to reach the car park.
